 Reviews "Belly Roll" By: Quincy Jones Instrumentation: Big Band Publisher: Warner Brothers Publications Grade 5 1/2 Medium Blues/Shuffle Tempo = 132 $55.00 This hard-swinging Jones original comes from to us from the Quincy Jones – Sammy Nestico CD titled “Basie & Beyond.” The Grammy –winning composer Quincy Jones used his multi-facetted musical talent to compose “Belly Roll” and then collaborated with the legendary Sammy Nestico to score this wonderful arrangement. A medium shuffle blues with a captivating groove with solo space for tenor sax, trumpet, alto sax and guitar. There is a well-written tutti section for saxes as they state the melody giving it an almost slippery feel. Also towards the end of the chart the saxes are once again at the forefront playing a very exciting shout chorus that truly roars. For an experienced big band that wants to be challenged this chart is a must for your book. Be sure your lead trumpet player has the chops to lay down this demanding part for both range and style.
