"Moving On"
By: Rachel Steckler
Instrumentation: Big Band
Publisher: The F.J.H. Music Company
Grade 3 1/2 Ballad Tempo = 60 $40.00

Rachel Steckler earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas and her Masters of Music degree in Studio Jazz Writing from the University of Miami in Florida. As an alumni of the University of Miami I can here the influences of their fine faculty. Especially Gary Lindsay and Ron Miller who are at the very least outstanding writers and composers in their own right.

Rachel has composed a lovely ballad which was originally written as a duet for piano and flugel horn. This arrangement was the second round for this creative work and is quite successful in it’s orchestration. Rachel states: “ At the conclusion of the chart, I wanted to give the listener a hint of how the composition was originally written.” This is where there is only piano and flugel horn. Other than this section there are wonderful colors and textures throughout the chart using the full instrumentation of the big band.

This original is for an advanced big band on the high school level and would best be performed by a college or university ensemble. Due to range, subtleties, and instrumentation very careful consideration of performers must be taken into account to ensure a good performance. “Movin On” is not for everyone, but with a high level ensemble and accomplished flugel horn player this music can be quite moving.
