"Blue Note "
By: Gregory W. Yasinitsky
Instrumentation: Big Band
Publisher: Kendor Music Company
Grade 2 Bright - Shuffle Tempo = 152 $45.00

This hard-swinging shuffle “blues with a bridge” was written in tribute to the great hard bop groups of the late 1950es and 1960es.

When “Blue Note” is rehearsed try to work especially with your rhythm section to develop a hard swinging groove. Have them listen to the great hard bop recordings including the classic CDs of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers among others.

Encourage your band to make the most of the contrasting dynamics featured in this chart. They should use a wide range of dynamics, from as softly as they can play all the way to a rich, roaring big band sound.

The “A” section of “Blue Note” consist of modified blues progression in concert Bb, so your soloists can use the Bb blues scale while improvising in these sections as a starting point for improvisation. Be aware that there are some tricky changes here and there, so help your tenor and trumpet soloists, or who ever you assign a solo slot and make sure they study the chord changes. With some detail to jazz theory their improvised solos will reflect the correct harmonies.

Gregory Yasintsky has written an excellent hard swinging blues chart for the big band. If you desire a chart with a built in groove then this is it.

Top note for trumpet C# above the staff
